All About Spelling
I started spelling late with my boys. Joshua was in 3rd grade and Matthew was in 4th grade when I officially started a spelling program. We had always worked on spelling common words and reading. Joshua is a naturally gifted speller and always has been. Matthew not so much. He struggles with dyslexia. He was a late reader and I knew he would be a late speller.
I never quite knew which spelling program to use because they all seem very complicated. I wanted to use the least confusing, least frustrating program I could find. One of my friends used a program called All About Spelling and raved about it. This year I gave it a shot and dove in full force. I bought all three of my kids the tile kits and whiteboards. I am amazed at how All About Spelling has transformed Matthew into a good speller. He still struggles with why rules are the way they are and why the English language does not make a lot of sense. That being said, he has gone from a failing speller to a good speller this year.
How Does It Work
All About Spelling is an amazing program. You start with book 1. The book starts off very basic but does increase with difficulty. The writers of this program have made it easy for anyone to teach spelling. As soon as you open up the book, you find all the instructions you need to teach the program. The book even tells you what to say to your student and if there are any “rule breakers”.
The student has a Progress Chart they can follow along with. My children like to hang theirs on the wall and cross off every lesson we have completed. At the end of the book, the student receives a Certificate of Achievement. My kids go crazy about receiving one. That goes on their school wall too along with other accomplishments they have achieved.
Multi-Sensory
All About Spelling follows the Orton Gillingham approach. I used the Barton Program to further Matthew’s reading ability. After book 3 of The Barton Program, I started All About Spelling. They pair nicely together.
