What is Math U See?
Have you heard your friends rave about Math U See, but don’t know anything about Math U See? When I first started homeschooling, I looked for a good math curriculum for my son. I came across Math U See and knew it would be a good fit. Math U See is an award winning homeschool math curriculum. It uses a multi-sensory approach to help teach math. They offer math curricula for grades 1st– high school.
Math U See uses a step by step systematic approach to teaching math. They believe in teaching each concept separately. Your child will not have to learn addition and subtraction at the same time. With Math U See, your child will be taught addition first. Once your child has mastered the skill of addition, they will move onto subtraction. Your child will always keep reviewing addition but will be also building their mastery of subtraction.
How Does Math U See Work?
The best thing about Math U See is that it uses a multi-sensory approach to teach math. Math can be hard for kids to learn, but with the resources Math U See uses it makes it easier.
First, each lesson has a short 5 minute (or shorter) video where Mr. Demme teaches you the concept you will be learning in that lesson. Wait, but who is Mr. Demme? He is the founder of Math U See and the teacher who will help teach your child the math concepts. Watching the videos helps your child process the lesson auditorily.
After your child watches the video, they will complete their course work. There are 3 worksheet pages in each lesson that help your child learn the lesson. The next 3 pages in the lesson are review worksheets. These worksheets will help your child systematically keep their mastery of the past math facts.
The very last page in each lesson is an enrichment page. They can be dot to dots, coloring sheets, measuring problems, or crossword puzzles. These worksheets are great for tactile learners. They give your child enough practice without overwhelming them.
While your child is watching the video and working on the worksheets, they will use blocks to help them see what they are learning. Math U See has color coded their block sets in order for your child to comprehend the problem at hand.
For example, the ten block is blue, while the one block is green (or red). This way if you child is working on 10-1, they can get out the blue block and put the green block on top on the blue block. This will signify that 9 blue blocks are left. The answer is 10-1=9. This works really well if your child is a visual learner!

What Will My Child Learn In Math U See Beta?
Your child will use the videos, worksheets, and manipulatives to complete each lesson. Some of the concepts covered in Beta are:
- Place Value
- Rounding To The Nearest 10, 100s, and 1000s
- Money
- Skip Counting
- Double Digit Addition
- Double Digit Subtraction
- Time
- Measuring
- Regrouping
Math U See Beta can be a bit intense depending on the grade of your child. My daughter is working on Beta now and she is in 2nd grade. It will be challenging for her. However, most children will complete this in 2nd grade. With the help of the videos, worksheets, and manipulates, Beta is easy to work through for kids of all grades.

What If I have A Special Needs Child?
So, you may be wondering, what happens if you have a Special Needs Child? Math U See can be great for ALL children! I have a Special Needs Child, and I use Math U See. I find it is less overwhelming for him because the lessons are made simple. All worksheets are in black and white. There is nothing on the page to distract your child. Each page does NOT have a ton of problems. The problems are spread out. There is plenty of room between each problem to show work.
Honestly, having the worksheet not overcrowded with problems and pictures has made it much easier for my son to focus and learn. Also, having the videos teaching the concept is super helpful. Having a multi-sensory program benefits ALL children!
In conclusion
I highly recommend Math U See. Having a multi-sensory learning style helps all children learn the way that suits them. It allows extra repetition to help memorize what they are working on. It also helps with processing what concept is being taught. My children have thrived using Math U See and I would bet yours will too!
